Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de San Sebastián – San Sebastian Technical School of Architecture

The venue is located in the old medieval town of Logroño, the capital of La Rioja and also the capital of wine. Like any medieval old town, it is easy to read the contrast between the full and the empty, between masses and hollows, that is, between the private space made up of buildings and the public space of narrow streets. While you can find gaps in the filled spaces, they are always private. With the aim of blurring that line, this work creates a place of union which embraces both spaces.

Using the given material, the pavement, the colour and the shape, it aims to represent the culture of the place, the wine, always leaving ultimate freedom of interpretation to the viewer. These interpretations can be recorded inside a barrel, with the wood planks impregnated with wine, or even the earth of the vineyards.

Though the object appears closed, it includes a few openings that allow for interactions with the viewer, creating visuals that traverse the object. As well as narrow openings, the change in paving creates some uncertainty on behalf of the spectator, who hesitates about whether or not they can enter, creating a forbidden and not-forbidden space.

Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de San Sebastián

The San Sebastian Technical School of Architecture (ETSASS) is the invited school of Concéntrico 04. Located at the Guipuzcoa campus, the centre is part of the University of the Basque Country.

5th year Students from Landscape (Professor Mario Sangalli) and Experimental Lab (Professor Iñigo de Viar) courses at ETSArquitectura have developed various ideas to take part in the festival, the winner being Enclosed Void, by a team made up of Haizea Latxaga, Izaskun Soto, Ane Santamaria, Henar Merino and Erminia Barone (Università degli studi di Napoli Federico II). Both the development of the final idea as well as its construction will be carried out by students from both disciplines, and will be located at Casa Farias.
