New Cities

The new season of Concéntrico is presented with a renewed focus that includes a variety of initiatives and formats in cities such as Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Dammam, Huesca and Logroño, consolidating a decade of innovations in architecture and urbanism. This edition stands out for the introduction of new formats that respond to contemporary challenges, including for the first time a call for the design of a permanent project, as well as educational programmes, exhibitions and itinerancies that encourage citizen participation..

Performing Architecture

Proyect

BASE Milano / Milán
April 2025

The ‘Performing Architecture’ project is an initiative driven by BASE Milano and DOPO? promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Concéntrico, dpr Barcelona and ZKU Berlin. Its main objective is to explore the role of ephemeral and performative architecture in urban space, with a special focus on the dynamics of Milan’s southern neighbourhoods. The project is organised in two lines of action: one focused on activities within the Italian territory, which aims to activate public space through architectural performances, and the other oriented towards the internationalisation of these architectural codes, which will be developed in external contexts.

The collaboration with Concéntrico structures the internationalisation of the project, participating in the selection of the main installation to be exhibited at BASE. In addition, one of the architecture teams participating in ‘Performing Architecture’ will be invited to a residency in Logroño, generating an intervention and a creative exchange that highlights the importance of community engagement and cultural dialogue between the cities involved, Milan and Logroño.

Corvin Cristian / Conde duque / Madrid
October – December 2024

Concéntrico starts a collaboration with the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea Condeduque in Madrid for the transformation of the Central Courtyard of the old barracks. This space, previously used for military purposes, will be redefined with the aim of becoming a multifunctional place that encourages social and cultural interaction. The first intervention in this context will be Cristian Corvin’s ‘Fountain’, which was presented at the tenth edition of the Concéntrico festival. This initiative seeks to continue the proposals of the festival and promote a dialogue with the community.

The intervention aims to revitalise the courtyard, creating an environment that facilitates reflection and encounter, and where culture and creativity can be triggers for new approaches to the space. ‘Fuente’ is proposed as a symbol of this transformation, with the purpose of strengthening the sense of belonging among the citizens. Concéntrico and Condeduque invite the community to get involved in this process of change, contributing to the creation of an accessible and dynamic cultural space.

Open Segments

Itinerancy

Syn architects / Tanween – King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture – Ithra / Dammam / Saudi Arabia

November 2024

The Open Segments pavilion by Saudi studio Syn Architects travels to King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) to be part of Tanween 2024, Saudi Arabia’s premier design event featuring debates, masterclasses and workshops under the theme ‘Fail Forward’ in a programme led by Shahad Alwazani. Tanween acts as a catalyst for innovation in design, fostering collaboration between experts, students and professionals, which we joined by participating in the panel on Architecture on 1 November, with the aim of promoting the exchange of ideas and the development of solutions to enrich society.

The Open Segments intervention, by the Saudi architects Sara Alissa and Nojoud Alsudairi, now takes on a new meaning after being part of Concéntrico in Logroño and is linked to the practice of the studio in its context of origin: ecologically sensitive design, drawing its aesthetics from a deep awareness of the environment and highlighting the intrinsic qualities of local materials.

The CDAN’s exhibition New Ways of Inhabiting, curated by Sixto Marín, brings together in the same exhibition works of art and architecture and landscape projects based on concepts such as sustainability, accessibility, equality, responsibility, solidarity, etc., paying special attention to their immediate surroundings and the people who inhabit them.

The exhibition, which opens with a professional conference on 25 and 26 October, incorporates the intervention of Lanza Atelier 1973-2021, which transformed the Logroño Town Hall square in dialogue with the architecture of Rafael Moneo during Concéntrico.
