Design Your Own Community Garden

Sahra Hersi
Workshop
2025

Participants will be invited to imagine, draw, and design their own community garden on-site, reflecting on how to create spaces that nurture both people and urban wildlife. Through a series of simple prompts, they will be encouraged to think about biodiversity and the importance of creating environments that support a wide range of species, including birds, bees, insects, and other creatures that share our cities. Participants will also be asked to consider how communal gardens can bring people together, offering a space for social connection, play, rest, and creativity.

In their designs, participants may include ideas for growing edible plants, herbs, fruits, and vegetables, encouraging a closer relationship with food and a greater understanding of local growing systems. The activity invites people of all ages and backgrounds to explore how gardens can support not only human needs but also contribute to the health of wider ecosystems in urban areas.

The workshop will last approximately two hours and will take place around a large communal table. Participants will use drawing tools such as markers, pens, pencils, and stickers to bring their ideas to life. Materials will be freely available to encourage playful, imaginative, and accessible participation. The approach is informal and welcoming, allowing each person to interpret the brief in their own way.

At the end of the session, all individual garden designs will be brought together to create a collective landscape – a shared vision for a greener, more connected city. This collaborative artwork will celebrate the imagination and diversity of the community, while highlighting the value of creating small pockets of nature within densely built environments.
