The Wall

The Wall is located in a historical site of the city where the Calle Marqués de San Nicolás, a segment of the Camino de Santiago, meets an ancient defensive wall that used to surround the city. Their encounter is marked by a small rectangular plaza with a missing side. The plaza is regularly crossed by pilgrims. The aim of the installation is to close this plaza, in order to create an urban alcove, a room without a roof, where pilgrims can settle temporarily and take some rest in the shade.
The installation basically raises the question: how do we build a temporary wall? The choice was made to construct the wall as a pile of cinder block and wooden pallets. The overall composition is inspired by the typical storage of cinder blocks in cement factories. This layered construction emphasises the temporariness of the installation as much as it ensures stability of the wall itself. In order to lighten the structure, one side of the wall is hollowed, with braced wooden crosses replacing the cinder blocks. The platform allows to recreate a horizontal surface absorbing the slope of the existing paved ground, and to provide seating for visitors. The position of the wall in its urban context also provides the installation with a theatre-like dimension, as the inverted T-shape structure may be perceived as a stage for actors and performers.

Muoto + Georgi Stanishev
Gilles Delalex is a principal of the French architecture firm Muoto, based in Paris. Muoto was founded by Gilles Delalex and Yves Moreau in 2003. Its activities cover the fields of architecture, urban planning, design, teaching, and scientific research. Its work often features minimal structures that can combine different activities, evolve in time, and merge economical and aesthetic issues. Since its establishment, the office has realized various projects ranging from master plans, public buildings, housing, and installations. Recently, Muoto has curated the French Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale 2023.
Georgi Stanishev is an architect and scenographer. His research focuses on aesthetic languages at the crossroads of architecture, installation and decor. His work covers the fields of exhibition design, event design, set design, and experimentation in public space.
He holds a doctorate in architecture from Université Paris-Est, UACEG, Sofia, and ENSA Paris-Malaquais, where he has taught architectural design and theory since 2011. His research and publications focus on the evolution of Soviet communism through its various moments of ideological and cultural rupture. In particular, his work examines the role of discourse on the arts and architecture in the production of political propaganda.
Georgi Stanishev is co-curator, with Studio Muoto, of the French Pavilion at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale 2023.
