Town Hall Square
2025
This project explores the boundaries of public space through a fundamental element of the city: the streetlamp of Logroño. It creates an urban condensation of elements to mark a center — an 18-meter-diameter circle with all the necessary tectonics to generate a forest of vertical elements, of poles supporting the lamps.
Human activity generally requires light, and it is public lighting that has allowed this activity for decades. Light is the urban enabler of nocturnal life in the city. Here, the condensation and repetition of these elements take on an aesthetic, artistic, and sculptural character, creating a space that invites reflection on the use of public space.
The site is the Town Hall Square, designed by Rafael Moneo, where the installation occupies the center of the plaza’s open void. The vertical elements engage in dialogue with the columns that articulate and support the building’s three floors, while enabling its cantilevering structure.
This is an urban experiment using surplus streetlamps, held up by the same scaffolding structures that have long helped build cities. These are recurring elements, once used elsewhere, now manifesting in a new form, ready to continue their life in future transformations.
