Chimney Passage – Concéntrico 10
What if architecture could dance? “Dancing carwash” invites you to join in its mysterious choreography. Dance and movement are a sign of joy and celebration, and provide a unique experience of the space around us. Traditional Spanish and local dances such as the stilt dances of Anguiano or Jota Riojana incorporate hypnotic rotations in their choreography for dancers and spectators alike. “Dancing carwash” aims to recreate the experience of these rotations for the visitors. The dresses and bangs of the dancers’ costumes inflate and unfurl during traditional dances. To question this evolving relationship between the volume of objects, the installation appropriates an everyday artefact rooted in our childhood memories: the automatic carwash.
At rest, the verticality of the dancing carwash columns echoes the chimney of Logrono’s antigua tabacalera. The columns are arranged on a base that functions like a turnstile, with gears and pulley integrated. The columns are set in motion by the rotation of the base by the dancers activating a crank handle. As they move, the colored filaments and fabrics unfurl and expand the column’s volume to occupy the alley space. Different sizes of filament create a festive atmosphere, inviting visitors to touch, dance, feel and play.
