In “Eclipse”, SpY proposes the installation of a black sphere with a diameter of 16mt to be located in the central oculus of the Logroño intermodal station.
The oculi in their architectural origin had the function of windows or as a passage of light. Etymologically, the word derives from the Latin expression “ochulos” which literally translates as “eye”.
In the Neolithic period it was interpreted as a symbol of the gods’ constant vigilance and attention to the actions of human beings.
SpY
SpY is an artist from Madrid whose first urban performances date back to the mid-eighties. Shortly afterwards, already established as a leading figure on the graffiti scene, he began to explore other forms of artistic communication in the street. His work consists of appropriating urban elements by transforming or replicating them, commenting on urban reality and interfering with its communicative codes.
The bulk of his production stems from the observation of the city and an appreciation of its components not as inert elements but as a palette of materials overflowing with possibilities. The desire to play, the careful attention to the context of each piece and a constructive, non-invasive attitude unmistakably characterise his work.
SpY’s works are intended as a parenthesis in the automaton-like inertia of the urbanite. They are pinches of intention that hide in a corner for those who want to be surprised. Loaded with equal parts irony and positive humour, they appear to spread a smile, to incite reflection, to encourage a slightly more awakened conscience.
