Off-season Pavilion
KOSMOS
Iglesia Santiago – Concéntrico 10
As an alternative to the resource-excessive and short-term architecture of temporary festivals, “Off-Season Pavilion” proposes to search for the locally available resources of Logroño and give them new temporary life outside of their productive cycle.
The installation reveals the hidden materials of the local agricultural industry: the so-called “jaulones de vino,” huge metal cages for the storage of wine bottles used in big ‘bodegas’. The unique quality of these storage cubes is that they have a very clear seasonal temporality. They are completely full of bottles in one part of the year and completely empty and unused in the other one, which, in our case, luckily coincides with the time of the Concentrico Festival.
The future of the construction industry will be circular and will move from “extraction -> construction -> demolition” to assembly -> reuse -> disassembly”. This means a constant flow of materials: from one disassembly site to the new one, and so on. “Off-Season Pavilion” visualizes the potential of the hidden material sources and promotes circularity as a response to the environmental impact of the construction industry.
“Off-Season Pavilion” shows how a playful attitude toward construction materials can create new architectural qualities and reveal the beauty of everyday infrastructure.
The pavilion, with its stepped roof, typologically resembles an agricultural shed and a traditional basilica at the same time, referring both to productive/labor and social/spiritual practices. Placed on a platform next to the Church of Santiago el Real, the pavilion offers shade and a place for gathering. Golden meshes of the cages create an intricate play of light and shadows and transform the space into a maze of dematerialized rooms.
The installation is carried out in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and Pernod Ricard Winemakers Spain.
