La Rebelión del Crazy Army

Recetas Urbanas

IES Batalla de Clavijo – Concéntrico 09

This new “Crazy Army”, made up of the students and teaching staff of the IES Batalla de Clavijo, plans to “take” the school, studying and understanding the relationship between the buildings that make it up and its immediate surroundings.

This exercise of collective strategy, to make the educational centre permeable and reconnect it with the public space, will be resolved with constructed prototypes that will allow the “assault” from different flanks.

These collective constructions will be coordinated by technicians, teachers and different advisors, who will collaborate in the process and in the assembly, including, in addition, some members of the Lakalle Association, that although based in Vallecas, Madrid, will come to collaborate in this experience.

This is how these young teenagers become the main actors and propose alternative ways of using public spaces in connection with the “Batalla”.

This experience is framed within the clear objectives of the Carasso Foundation’s Planea Network, where working in educational environments through art and social commitment is fundamental as a tool for change.

Although the design process is not finished, conceptual lines and built structures are already being sketched out. So we hear stories of mobile towers, Trojan horses, walkways, ladders, steps, tirolinas and even tunnels.

The different elements, once their technical suitability, speed and reversibility have been studied, will be built with 100 wooden beams 6 m long and up to 150 boards of different woods, which will be reused after the end of the festival, just like the proposals in the public space that will remain as a catalogue of suggestions for possible actions by the public administrations.

Recetas Urbanas

RECETAS URBANAS has worked with more than 8000 people in more than 50 inclusive self-construction projects, reusing materials worth more than €2,000,000, and generating joy and critical mass unaccounted for.

Santiago Cirugeda is an architect from Seville born in 1971 who has developed architectural projects, written articles and participated in different debates, round tables, workshops, congresses and architecture biennials. He worked for 7 years on his own, tackling, in the field of urban reality, issues such as ephemeral architecture, recycling, the reuse of materials, strategies for urban occupation and intervention, the incorporation of prostheses into constructed buildings and citizen participation in decision-making processes on urban planning issues. In 2003 he set up the Recetas Urbanas studio. He has written several books, such as Situaciones Urbanas, which shows legal strategies and social demands through architectural projects, and the book Arquitecturas Colectivas, which portrays his initiative to mobilise dozens of collectives to recycle containers from a dismantled temporary settlement and which led to the birth of the Arquitecturas Colectivas collective itself. In 2008 he presented the documentary Spanish Dr€am, together with Guillermo Cruz, which reveals the causes and effects of the real estate bubble in Spain.

Numerous projects include Kuvas S.C. (1997 Seville), Casa Rompecabezas (2002 Seville), Prótesis Institucional ESPAI (2005 Castellón), Aula Abierta (2006 Granada), el Niu (2008 Girona), Proyectalab (2010 Benicasim), La Carpa – Espacio Artístico (2012 Seville) and the House of Words pavilion for the International Contemporary Art Biennial in Gothenburg (2015), the Escuela Crece (2015) and the Centro Sociocomunitario de la Cañada Real (2019).

Alice Attout was born in 1984 in Namur, Belgium. She graduated from ISACF – La Cambre de Bruseas in 2008. In the same year, she joined the Recetas Urbanas Studio where she develops architectural projects in socio-cultural areas, both in studio work and on site. Together with Santiago Cirugeda, he is in charge of design, administration, budgets and other management and dissemination tasks, such as publications in international exhibitions of the work they carry out together, with special emphasis on the development of inclusive works, generating training processes that facilitate the participation of excluded groups. It specialises in searching for new protocols for public projects, negotiating between legality and illegality and reminding us of the excessive control that public institutions try to impose on us. The work of Recetas Urbanas is characterised by its continuous experimentation using the city as a laboratory and a space for conflict resolution.

RECETAS URBANAS AWARDS: It received the Ojo Crítico, Iniciarte, Naider “Society, City and Territory” awards (2008) as well as the International Fellowship of the RIBA, the FAD medal, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture (2015), the Ones Mediterrània (2016) and the Curry Stone Design Prize (2017 + 2018 to the Arquitecturas Colectivas network).
