Transtation is a prototype of circular infrastructure —both material and energetic— located within the area of Logroño’s train station. The pavilion is built from pieces of a former electrical substation that, owing to urban and energy development, had become obsolete: in this way it circularly reuses the resources of the site itself to build a new architecture.
Yet Transtation closes not only a material cycle but also an energetic one. It establishes a synergistic exchange with the new station by generating energy from the organic waste of train and bus passengers through a biodigestion system. The biogas produced is temporarily stored in the membrane of its roof and then transformed into electricity.
At the same time, the pavilion harnesses and redirects the surpluses of renewable energy —common in summer— toward the inactive water tanks beneath the tracks. These large reservoirs act as seasonal batteries, storing energy for the winter, when demand is higher and production lower. The whole process is visualised in real time for citizens through an LED screen on the roof.
Through the use of spolia —reclaimed pieces—, Transtation enables symbiotic exchanges of matter and energy, helping the entire station area to maintain a dynamic equilibrium based on closed cycles. The project preserves the historical, cultural and material values of Logroño while testing a transition toward a post-fossil future, where infrastructure no longer consumes resources but reorganises them.
