Future Firm’s proposal explores how the city’s existing infrastructures can act as agents capable of activating new relationships with their surroundings. Taking the Puente de Hierro and its proximity to the river Ebro as a starting point, the project investigates how these structures can intensify their role as spaces of connection, dwelling and observation of the riverine landscape.
Through a light, temporary intervention, the proposal seeks to make the relationship between the city and the river more permeable, understanding existing architecture not as a mere physical support but as an active support for new forms of urban use and experience.
True to a practice that works with agents of civic change to imagine a diverse, vibrant future city, Future Firm shifts the focus from building new objects toward reactivating what already exists: the bridge ceases to be merely a point of passage and becomes a place to pause, look at the Ebro and reconnect with the landscape.
Future Firm
Future Firm is an architecture and design research office based in Chicago that works with agents of civic change through a strategic, idea-driven approach. Founded by Ann Lui and Craig Reschke in 2015, and expanded in 2023 with Linda Chávez Baca as principal, the practice develops projects at various scales for cultural organisations, non-profits and socially minded businesses. Its work seeks to imagine a diverse, vibrant future city, broadening the traditional scope of architecture through design, research and strategic thinking. Recent recognitions include awards from The Architect’s Newspaper and The Architectural League of New York.
