The Street in 10 years

Programme with Porto Academy
Beti Jai / Duquesa de la Victoria / La Glorieta
Concéntrico 10

This new programme, launched with Porto Academy, promotes the transformation of the way cities are built by introducing the time factor into the design strategy. The winning team, Daryan Knoblauch, and the four finalist strategies from BeAr, Matilde Cassani, DF_DC and salazarsequeromedina, presented projects that answered the question “What could a street look like if it were transformed with a ten-year strategy?

Scenius 26003, Daryan Knoblauch’s winning proposal for the 10-year street programme, challenges conventional urban planning by proposing a decade-long continuous learning approach to Logroño’s streets, introducing the time factor into the design strategy. Through interaction with the community and in-depth analysis of urban dynamics, it seeks to strengthen local identity and encourage diversity and care in urban development. This initiative promotes a more organic and participatory approach to the design of public spaces, highlighting the importance of dialogue and experimentation in building more inclusive and resilient cities.

The first act of Scenius 26003 will take place in Concéntrico 10 with the temporary intervention Megaphone, an element that will reappear annually until 2034 as a symbol of communication and change. This space will offer meetings, conferences or workshops, facilitating community participation in urban design. See the programme in detail and and the interpretation space made with mmcité.

Scenius 26003

By studying, evaluating, and analysing the street through conversations with locals, experts, and cultural producers, proposes an open process that is both iterative and incomplete by design.

The Shared Ground Floor

The shared ground floor understands that the street is a cooperative space, a space of change and that it should be used more. The street is everyone’s domestic space: a dense, fluid, accessible, integrating, changing and unexpected proposal.

The Adventure is a drama film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. In the movie, in a 4-minute-long fixed camera scene, Sandro, architect, is sitting on a bench, and Monica Vitti approaches him and, with difficulty, caresses him.

Strategy

Siempre Fiesta

A long-term strategy is conceived as a series of shorter-term actions in unsteady succession. The following response to ‘how can a street change in 10 years?’ is presented as a  strategy flexible & adaptable in time, rather than as a design.

Concéntrico 10

BEAR, Matilde Cassani, DF_DC, Daryan Knoblauch and salazarsequeromedina are the five teams selected from among the 82 applications received at Concentrico to tackle the second phase of The Street in 10 Year. This new programme, launched with Porto Academy, promotes transforming the way cities are built by introducing the time factor into the design strategy.

The teams were selected on the basis of a letter answering the question “What could a street look like if it were to be transformed with a 10-year strategy for action?” They now have until 1 February to design their strategy.

The international jury formed by Aslı Çiçek, Nick Axel, MAIO, Amélia Brandão Costa – Rodrigo da Costa Lima and Javier Peña will select the winning proposal to be implemented in Concéntrico 10, between 25 April and 1 May 2024.

Call for proposals

This two-phase call for proposals allows us to deepen the founding thesis of Concéntrico: cities can be built differently. The proposal is to rethink a central urban environment of the city with a 10-year perspective: a strategic thinking for this area to be developed in a 10-year time frame. The selected environment integrates different types of urban fabric: pedestrian street, street with various mobility models and square/park area.

Jury The Street in 10 years

The jury of The Street in 10 years is composed of Aslı Çiçek, Nick Axel, MAIO, Amélia Brandão Costa – Rodrigo da Costa Lima and Javier Peña:

Aslı Çiçek, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, is an architect and writer based in Brussels since 2005. She is currently associate professor at Hasselt University and visiting professor at Ghent University.

Nick Axel is an architect, editor, educator and curator. He is Deputy Editor of e-flux Architecture, head of the Department of Architectural Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.

MAIO is an architectural practice based in Barcelona and Zurich working on spatial systems that enable theoretical positions to materialise. MAIO is directed by Maria Charneco, Alfredo Lérida, Guillermo López and Anna Puigjaner.

Amélia Brandão Costa and Rodrigo da Costa Lima, Architecture Matters is both the name and the philosophy under which they practice, are founding directors of Indexnewspaper and Porto Academy.

Javier Peña is a curator, researcher, teacher and consultant in architecture, design and the city. Director of Concéntrico.

The five teams selected in the first phase – with a prize of €1,500 per team, plus the final winner’s fee of €2,500 – will have to design and plan the actions they would develop to progressively transform the public spaces of Beti Jai Street / Duquesa de la Victoria Street / La Glorieta Park, integrating the social, physical and aesthetic spheres in their methodology.
